SINULOG@30 2010 BLOG 1: Getting There

This is going to be a series of blogs and photos for Sinulog 2010.

So Joepi is now in Cebu to join in again on the fun and immerse herself in the sights and sounds of Sinulog as it celebrates it's 30th anniversary. I didn't know until I arrived that the festival was created the same year I was born. Pretty cool!

So here's how the trip started…

First I stopped to have breakfast at a cafe called Chaikofi. Chaaaay! In gay-linggo that's what you call a friend. It wasn't the friendliest place in the world, but the gay waiter and cashier were both friendly enough and they had wifi. So I was happy. What was weird was the color of the cafe. It was all yellow – as in SUNFLOWER yellow and black. I think I know now how a bee feels like when in a honeycomb and all you see are those colors. I hadn't had much to eat for the past 12 hours so I got myself a frankfurter sandwich. I thought it would be good and filling. I was disappointed. For $3 I got a thin sandwich with mostly onions and 8 puny slices of the damn sausage. I paid my bill. Thank you for the sandwich that went with the wifi. :-p

I went on my way to the gate as the time for boarding was nearing. Lo and behold I have a celebrity on my plane. Childstar turned Rapper Billy Crawford was there in his red leather cap. His presence just reminded me of the pageantry and pomp I was about to witness for the weekend.

As I boarded I don't know why I had to pee real bad. For the first time I was a little bit ashamed to have to go against everyone who was boarding as I pushed myself to get to the loo. Too much water and coffee to wash down the damn onions I guess. While the cargo was being loaded, I watched the activity below and saw a lady guard doing a body check on one of the baggage guys and she was cuppy-feeling EVERYTHING and I mean every INCH of the poor guy. I bet she was enjoying. I'm sure he was too. Then I glanced as the last cargo haul pulled up and unloaded at least 7 cages with big bunny rabbits!

As I got to Cebu, I was greeted with raindrops and cool sleepy weather. I'm usually grumpy when I see this kind of weather but for some reason I welcomed it. I guess because I was already feeling sleepy and was welcoming the bed weather, but I was also put in the mood to pay my visit to long time family friends who have lost their beloved grandpa – Papa Genio. As I rode my Php300 cab ride, I looked around at Cebu's wall art and noticed one weird one among an environmental series of murals. It had a huge globe drawn on it cracked in the middle with a band-aid and it said "Heal the World." But what made it weird was the figure in the middle. A man with a black hat, white gloves and posed like Pop King MJ (feet together, one arm out) BUT he was dressed in JC's white loin cloth. Talk about weird. Before I got carried away in analyzing the image, I felt my tummy growl and decided to attend to my human need to eat properly and to have dimsum and "steamed rice" (a fantabulous concoction of rice and toppings and some secret sauce) which always brings me back to my childhood recollections of the Chinese restaurant we frequented here in Cebu as a little girl. After my cup of Steamed rice, 3 Shrimp Balls and 3 Mushroom Shiomais, I was ready to go again and on my second wave. But not after a quick cup of coffee and another weird sight: a girl had her sweater on backwards!

And here's another sight on the road – which depicts my current state:

I was picked up by my mum's youngest brother, Uncle Weng (pronnounced as Wing) and we headed to Rolling Hills Funeral Homes. I was greeted by another funny sight. I saw a wheelchair through the window zipping back and forth. It would have scared me to death but I let out a sigh of relief as I saw that it was my friend's son in the chair having the time of his life wheeling around in the lobby of the funeral home. Sheeesh. As I got inside, all the grandmas were praying and we waited around outside with Mr. Wheely and some wifi. Prayer meeting over, I went in and said hello to my grandma and the rest of the folks. I ended up giving my earrings to my grandma and having a nice little catch up with her from the time at the chapel to all the way to my hotel. I am amazed at how strong she still is and how good her memory is. We were talking about travel, her first experience on a plane (which was in 1949 from Manila to Cebu), her boat experiences (how she went through storms and got absolutely drenched INSIDE the boat), what do I love most about traveling, what food in what country do I enjoy most, and Singapore's clean city and Vietnam's fresh food. I had to cut our convo short as I was already at my hotel. I wish I had more time. I think I will come by again on another weekend and just spend time with her.

I am now in my modest little hotel and absolutely ready for bed! I will be awake when the sun goes down and the party lights switch on! More to come on tonight's activities in Alejandro's where 2 celebs await! Snap snap! More photos to come!

Nudibranch Blog #1

I just realized I've never really written much about these creatures that I love so much. So this blog is for them.

Nudibranchs come in all shapes and sizes but they are never any bigger than your finger. They come in so many colors and patterns too. When you dive, it's hard not to notice them even in their miniature state because of these colors. The sheer variety of this creature makes them very appealing to my "collector" mentality and I want to be able to see and photograph and identify all of them. Looking back on those dive trips, there are really some spots that will allow you to spot more nudi's than others.

In Anilao, favorite nudi spots for me are Kirby's Rock, Koala and the stretch between Balai to Twin Rocks. Place outside Anilao that seemed to have nudi's that I haven't seen before is Sogod Bay in Leyte. Reviewing my photos made me realize how many new things I saw there. No wonder I was so happy after that trip despite missing the butanding!

Here's the link to a slideshow of my nudi flickr photos:

So far, these are my favorites from my collection on flickr:

Here’s to a Perfect 10

I woke up at the last 9pm of 2009 feeling more awake than I usually do in my call-center-schedule-"mornings". I went downstairs to make my coffee and eat my "breakfast." It was a pretty sad sight, BUT I thank Ate Mau for cooking this up and following my request to have breakfast food at this time of night. :-D

No one was home. The dogs were out being taken for a walk by our helpers and the family was still in Cebu. I could hear a few loud fire crackers going off outside courtesy of the "Butchie" household as I like to call them. They have monkeys in there – literally. I wonder how the animals feel. I was getting worried about the doggies wandering outside with all this racket. Their ears must hurt. Just when I was thinking about that, they come walking in with the yayas in tow. :-) I finished brekky, brought my coffee to go and headed off to work by 10pm. I was a little bit worried about encountering some stray fire power from reckless idiots who still believe fire crackers are fun to throw and set off. Surprisingly, the roads were very very quiet in my side of town. Even the usual town idiots weren't around except for a few. People are either getting smarter or getting poorer. I'm afraid it might be the latter. Anyway, I got to work and prepared a few slides for a Powerpoint presentation for a meeting with clients at 1am (I guess I know what 2010 will look like for me!) I was glad to see that the agents showed up though. I know there were a lot absent (and a lot to be reprimanded!) but I was also very grateful to those who showed up. As we neared midnight, we made sure everyone got their free food from Friday's and got ready for a countdown. I watched the fireworks go off outside my office.

Then we started the countdown…. 10… 9… 8… 7… 6… 5… 4…3…2…JUAN! Happy New Year Pilipinas!

Here are the fireworks from Eastwood Mall where they had their own countdown.
This was the view from our office pantry. Pretty amazing to see fireworks at eye level!

After this I took my first conference call for 2010 (their last for 2009)… and yes I have two Avaya phones in my office. I like Avaya phones. It would be great if I had one at home. (Geek.)

I breezed through the rest of the day and kept myself busy with timecards, rosters, performance numbers, schedules, scorecards and all possible preparations for the year. After doing all this on the way home I thought about things that I would improve on and things I should achieve. So here's the 2010 plan (everyone's gotta plan this.)

1) I told myself that I am going to take my photography more seriously this year (seriousness gauge = lenses, lights and paid gigs) and this might go against the plan to go to South America in 2010. I have to choose and it may be photography as I am sure of traveling to Palau and around the PH this year anyway.
2) I am going to do something creative everyday. I have 3 avenues: iPhart (http://www.iphart.mobi/), photography and my handy-dandy sketchbook.
3) I am going to eat healthier (cut down on Starbucks, eat more fruits, drink more water, sleep and exercise at least 30 minutes a day) This is the cliche thing but I really have to do it if I plan to look good as I turn 30 and lose 30! — ahah! There's a line: 30 minutes, 30 lbs, 30 years.
4) I will travel and dive when I can and within budget ;-) Time to learn to travel light (on the pocket.) I've been spoiling myself in 2009. I will be more careful in the travel and dive financials for 2010.
5) I will have my Quiet Time and no one can bother me for that. In this noisy world we live in. We need this to keep our sanity with all the changes that are happening too.

The ride home also gave me three songs which started the year right for me:
ABBA's Name of the Game – http://www.lyricsfreak.com/a/abba/the+name+of+the+game_20002863.html

Third Eye Blind's Semi-Charmed Life – http://www.musicfanclubs.org/3eb/3eblyrics/lyrics_semi.htm
</object>

and All Saint's Pure Shores – http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/allsaints/pureshores.html

Of course with all that, I had to look back at 2009:

It was truly a year of adventure, change and discovery. I was awed by the many things I saw this year – from Sinulog, to turtles and barracudas in Sipadan, sharks and stars in Tubbataha, wonderful coffee, the craziness of humanity and the deep connections we establish with friends. It was a year where my thoughts and feelings were jumbled up so much that there were days that I seriously didn't know which way was up. It was a year that I took chances. It was a year that took me by surprise (in which the shocks still leave me reeling sometimes.) It was a year where things changed in many, many aspects.

With all that here are the things I am taking away from 2009 as my key learning: I discovered that I am not the best person to handle change as it made me feel the worst that I have ever felt that up to now, I cannot say I am the happiest camper in the world. I think that bad feeling was compounded by the fact that I came from a state where I felt and was at the BEST that I have ever been in my life and you know that feeling that you just can't help but compare how it was before and how it is now? It was so painful to see how from being on top, I found myself clawing my way back to the peak as others try to take my spot.

I am learning to cope with change – or should I say – the current state of affairs – and am now putting my feet back on the ground. I now find myself in a place where I am humbled by the juxtaposition of reality and expectations, I am grounded by the weight of responsibility, and I am being held steady by supporting arms of colleagues and friends. It wasn't so bad, but it was a helluva year.

So with that I welcome 2010 with new things to EXPLORE DREAM CREATE IMAGINE AND DISCOVER.

Toooot. Happy New Year. Here's to a Perfect 10.
