Day 3 Management by Walking Around… or Away?

Sorry for the one liner blog yesterday. I started it and then got caught up in making my flickr photo of the day and thought about just marking the day on here to mark the final curtain call of two great entertainers.

Anyway, that’s done, and here I am ending another day.
I had just come from a two day leadership training for managers. I’d love to post all my key learning here, but I won’t. If you want it, you gotta be a leader in my company to get it. The content of the training is very relevant to the success of a leader and I am very happy to have received this kind of training for FREE. A lot of folks pay big money for this kind of thing and I am so grateful for the chance to learn and be given this particular tool for success. I just hope that I will be able to execute the plans that I now have in place.

I won’t be sharing the course, but here are a few thoughts that I had during the training (I hope my team is reading this!) I hope as well, that you would find this helpful. Call it paying forward.

We all know this leadership tool: MBWA or Management by Walking Around, right? If you don’t, it’s a pretty common practice. Leaders are expected to walk the floor and spend time with their people, and not isolate themselves in their offices/cubicles/workstations/Starbucks reading their emails. As a leader, you are expected to be with your direct reports and give them the support they need.
The funny thing is, a lot of leaders actually end up walking AWAY instead of being where they should be. We joked about it in class how MBWA can mean the total opposite, but it stuck in my head because it is a reality for some leaders and they don’t even realize it.
If you’re a leader on the floor, ask yourself these questions:
1) Where am I when my direct report needs a document to be signed?
2) Where am I when my direct report wants to raise an issue about their pay?
3) Where am I when my direct reports are requested to do overtime?
4) Where am I when my direct reports have failing scores/sales numbers/quotas?
5) Where am I when my direct reports fail to come to work on time?
6) Where am I when my direct report is seeking personal advice?
7) Where am I when my direct report succeeds?
8 ) Where am I when my direct report struggles with a certain process or methodology?
9) Where am I when I see my team’s performance is heading anywhere but north?
10) Will my direct reports know where I am when my boss looks for me?

If your answer is anywhere near the “they will know where to find me” or the “What kind of question is that? I am always with them! I even know how often they go to the bathroom!” (Stalker! :-P ) Well, if you know you’re there, good. That’s 1/4 of the skill! You still have 3 parts to go:

1) When you’re there, are you sure you’re interacting with them? You can be physically present, but your mind is still far, far away from where it should be.
When you tell your team that you will be there, make sure your mind is present as well. Your direct reports need more than a warm body on the floor.
2) Now that you’re physically and mentally there, are you using the proper tools to engage with your agents to make your presence useful? A lot of leaders would often have coaching sessions and feel that they have “prepared” themselves for it only to find in the end that they have wasted both their time and their direct report’s time. It takes more to it than saying “I have the tools.” You have to know WHAT tools to use and most importantly and which leads to the last piece of the puzzle:
3) You have to know HOW to use those tools and be EFFECTIVE in using them. There are a lot of interventions out there that a leader can do to bring their teams to success. But this last bit takes the longest time to master. When you want to Manage By Walking Around – you have to be there, know what intervention to use (ie: side by side, skill transfer, giving immediate feedback) and know how to do all these effectively. All of your effort will be in vain and it (this will sound harsh) might be better for you to walk away because it is all a game of “much ado about nothing at this point.”

So I challenge you leaders out there to take MBWA seriously and not just treat it as a common management tool. It is not as simple as you think. There will be a lot of stumbling blocks before you can make this as effective as you want it to be, but don’t give up. As our trainer said, “Practice makes PERMANENT!” (Sounds so wrong without the “perfect” huh?) but the permanency of this best practice is what you need to seek to make you successful.

I am officially a geek. 8-D

*disclaimer* These are all just thoughts and ideas that have challenged me into making my leadership skills better. If you found anything of value here, by all means use it. If you find anything wrong, feel free to comment and bring up your points. I am not a John Maxwell. Just an open and willing learner.

Day 2 Curtain Call

Michael Jackson died today(I loved the 80’s MJ.) So did Farah Fawcett (I love her hair.)

Day 1 Long Day Done.

Long day at work, but very productive.

I love how you can hear, watch, and see the way your peers and bosses work. I saw the way one of my bosses (and friend) take ownership today. That was a big thing to see, and my Shift Manager and I were very, very impressed.

I also love how your agents can give the correct answer important and crucial process questions. It’s tough when you walk out of a meeting wondering if ALL your agents actually know about certain processes that you know has been cascaded quite some time ago, and knowing with sinking certainty that half of them don’t know it… BUT it’s absolutely wonderful to be pleasantly surprised (and relieved) when you hear them say the right thing!

I have a love-hate relationship with my work laptop now. I love the fact that it’s pretty fast. I love the way it looks and it’s soft keys. I love how I’ve set it up. BUT I hate the way it’s starting to give up on me! (Harrumf. Sigh.) I shouldn’t be too hard on it. I work it to death with the 10 million spreadsheets I open! I took him home with me today. Worked on some stuff… I can see why some people really bring home work. I was actually able to sort out this thought that I couldn’t quite iron out at work earlier today. Sometimes I think you need to step out of your usual surroundings to clear your thoughts and get your own “fresh pair of eyes.” I know that’s supposed to be for someone else to look at your work and have a different view. In this case though, I felt different looking at my work from home than when in my own office. Weird. NO. I am NOT a workaholic. I have a life outside of work too. Ok, that’s a sign for me to stop talking about it.

Got picked up from Alabang by 007. As we neared Bicutan, I got a call that my daddy needs to be picked up somewhere (pronto!) but I had to pay bills! So I got off at the mall there and paid my bills. Told 007 to fetch Daddy Warbucks. This little Annie’s got some stuff to do and will take a taxi home. After paying my bills and a little impulse buying (I got new Gigi’s–sexiness!) I decided to go home. Stopped to wait for a taxi.

Taxi Driver #1:”Sorry I’m actually going to pick up someone in Las Pinas”
Joepi (calm): “I’m only going to be dropped off in Merville! (less than minutes away) Taxi zooms off.

6 minutes and 4-cabs-that-didn’t-stop later…

Joepi: “Kuya, para po!” (please stop, please stop, please stop, YES! he stopped! And rolled down his window!)
Taxi Driver #2: Where to?
Joepi: “Just over there…. (insert smile)… in Merville
Taxi Driver #2: Shakes head… Looks confused… Shakes head again.
Joepi: (Rolls eyes) WAG KA NA! (Nevermind you!)
*walk and exit to West service road*

I got impatient with the cabs. I saw an empty jeep that had “MERVILLE” written on it’s side. I got on. Rode all the way home from Bicutan in that dust covered jeep, got on two tricycle rides, and finally got home. It’s been a while since I took public transportation. I have no qualms about it and will take it if I have to, but having your own car with a 007 driver just makes life SOOOO much more convenient. I sound like a brat huh? I’m not trying to be one.
I’m just appreciating what I have.

Anyway, I’m sleepy now. Off to bed.

Loved My Fate at 28 Will Make It Mine at 29

Yes, I have been playing with rhymes. I can’t help it, it’s stuck in my head. Anyway, so this is going to be the birthday blog. I don’t know if I had imported last year’s blog on here. I don’t think I have, but I’ll post it later.

So. Turned 29 today. As usual, it’s raining. Last year I missed a trip to Boracay. Now, surprise, surprise, it is pouring once again. Before I went to bed yesterday, thunder was rolling… then clapping… then the huge raindrops came which eventually lulled me to a deep sleep. No call, SMS, or IM could wake me up on schedule. Woke up with a start finally after 30 minutes of snoozing and a sibling sent by my wake-up-caller! :-D And of course, with heavy rain, comes heavy traffic, which was heavier than usual because of the construction of the mighty Skyway (Phase 2!) Good thing my ever reliable 007 Driver, Marlon, took a detour to the other side of the service road which quickened our pace… sorta. But I still didn’t arrive on schedule and missed out on a Prime Rib Dinner. (Not complaining though as that was for the agents and not for Managers. Oh and for those who don’t know, I work in a call center.) By the manner of which I am writing, you’d think I wasn’t having a good start, or should I say end, to my 28th year. I’m not and I didn’t. I went through the day as normal, but it was little things that made it special. Little things like:
1) The funny wake up call (all effort! SMS, Phone, Chat, and Sibling ready to tickle me if I didn’t get up)
2) The hug I got from my little sister as I left for work and her mumbling in her “emo” (she refuses to be called that) way “hapibrday’te-joepi-*kiss*”
3) The 51 greetings on facebook (and counting)
4) The hugs and kisses as I walked in the office (which almost made me forget to fingerscan)
5) The lovely emails sent (despite the photos that went along with it!)
J– Joyful

O – Operator –> LOL, this one was a brow raiser! :D

E – Eloquent

P – Photographer

I – Inspiring

To our Operations Manager –
For the JOY that your big presence gives… For the support that makes us OPERATE (so this was what she meant :P )
For being transparent with what you say and feel. For the memories you always put together with all your PHOTOGRAPHS and last for sharing your time and (stories) which leave us INSPIRED… Happy Birthday.
6) Being told how you have changed someone’s life
7) Being told how gorgeous you are (despite feeling a year older and seeing your body far from what it used to be 10 years ago)
8 ) Having someone wake up in the middle of the night to greet you happy birthday.
9) Seeing someone’s MSN Status greeting you the whole day through (in Portugese nonetheless!)
10) Being called a Bronzed Beach Bunny by one of your mates (I have been called many things, but this is an original!)
11) Having your parents call you at 6am to greet you (My dad was hilarious. He greeted me and went on about how it always rains on my birthday, how he remembers the day I was born and it there was a typhoon named Juaning and he was trying to figure out a way to drive through flood and bad weather and get to the hospital) and hearing them say “I love you.”
12) Having your friend’s child born on the same day (Congratulations, Cagney for that 7 pounder! You’re a trooper! You just needed to get that Prime Rib Dinner huh?!)
13) Being able to share McDonald’s and actually enjoy it!
14) Having a productive day without giving in to a very tempting tantrum-inducing-situation.
15) Coming home to Adobo and Rice after an hour of traffic…

Little things that have big meanings for me.
My 28th year was full of pleasant surprises, changes, discoveries and challenges. If you’re reading this and you know we’ve had a conversation, shared thoughts, butt heads, traveled, gone diving, went on photo shoots together, wined and dined together, please know that you have made it special for me and I am grateful (or GREATful as my dear friend once said!)

So here’s to being 29 in 2009. Whatever good opportunity comes my way, I will make it mine.
